Subject: It's always more curious than expected: Issue61
2003/06/05 23:49 Publication of Issue 61 of Zyra's website
Hi to all!
Here's another of those strange Circular Newsletters to do with the publishing of a new issue of Zyra's peculiar website. I hope you've got time to read it! (There's a tea-break in the middle)
Among the many items of stuff in this issue: Sony teams up with Ericsson, cats, Australian superstores, skirts for men, international hotels, punks, Australian bookshops, coffee that changes every week, the scandalous truth behind Soy Sauce, how to defeat annoying pop-ups, SAVE CAMDEN MARKET, Australian jewellers, unmetered Internet access, Russian submarines for sale, British Red Cross, ClickBank, Uruguayan domains for sale, a transvestite emporium, Weight Loss in Australia, and how to hide your e-mail address so as to confuse the SPAM-robots!
But first, the piccies! On this Circular newsletter you see a picture taken from a high window at a London hotel, and then a rather curious picture "Zyra attempting to play guitar upon the wires that are a pigeon-deterrent, while meanwhile in the background a motorist dares to utilise the bus lane, unaware of the time-stamped photo capture". For those of you watching the snooker in black & white, no problem, as you can see these pictures on some webspace. The small pictures are at www.zyra.org/county2.jpg and www.zyra.org/twang2.jpg , and to see the full-sized pictures, it's www.zyra.org/county1.jpg and www.zyra.org/twang1.jpg
In the new Issue61 of Zyra.org.uk there are 4668 items in the site index www.zyra.org.uk/sindex.htm , which means the site index page is getting on for being the download size of a small paperback. Something has to be done sooner of later, and there are plans to change the way it's done. Helpful constructive comments in advance will help!
Now, have you noticed there's quite a few Australian additions to the site? Well, the affiliate company DGM2 have expanded to open a branch in that Southern continent where the weather is hot, the people are optimistic, and the wildlife is decidedly strange. No now, as well as advertising Lasseters Casino at www.zyra.org.uk/lasstrs.htm we're also advertising such places as TopShop Australia www.zyra.tv/topshopa.htm , Dymocks Booksellers www.zyra.net/dymocks.htm , Weight Loss in Australia www.zyra.org/wtlossau.htm , and other places which you can see listed at the Australia page www.zyra.org.uk/austral.htm , and before you say "Yes, but I live thousands of miles from one of those shops", firstly remember that quite a lot of people IN AUSTRALIA live thousands of miles from some of the places in Australia, and also, quite a few of the places advertised offer delivery anywhere in the world! So, the Land of OZ here we come! (And not a mention of Kangaroos or being upside-down anywhere!).
British Telecom, godlike and capricious corporation that the are, have decided to put the price of UK SurfTime up, and if this affects you then you may be interested to know that there's a way of avoiding this by signing up to an ISP which isn't within this system. For example, www.zyra.org.uk/v21.htm which costs a penny less than £10 per month for Internet access at any time of day or night.
Another thing worth knowing which is good for saving money on phone calls is the knowledge of *411# and #411#. This much underadvertised useful quirk of the British Telecom system is mentioned at www.zyra.org.uk/x411x.htm
Shucks! It's tippling down with rain out there! I should really collect it and use it to make a cup of tea. The best rainwater tea is made after it's been siling down for a while and has already had a chance to wash out most of the industrial muck that's been puthering out of chimneys and the agricultural poison that's been squirted about in aerial bombing raids by farmers.
And now moving around the world some more, in New York there's a well known newspaper The New York Times, and there's an offer by which if you live ANYWHERE IN THE CONTIGUOUS USA you can have The New York Times delivered to your home. More about this at www.zyra.net/nytimes.htm , and there's also a remarkable range of historic pictures available at The New York Times Store at www.zyra.net/nytstor.htm
Airline news: Not sure what's happened to Air2000, but at www.zyra.org.uk/airlines.htm there are some new bargain flight ticket places, and in particular the FLIGHT SEARCH-ENGINE OPODO at www.zyra.org.uk/opodo.htm where you can enter the destination and it works out the best deals for you!
AND, if you collect Frequent Flyer Miles but haven't managed to collect enough of them yet, you can BUY some at Miles4Sale at www.zyra.net/miles4.htm
Meanwhile, on the ground, or more notably to do with the UNDERGROUND, there is a problem on the streets of Camden. It appears that there is a plan by the Underground Railway to invade some of the surface and to wipe out some of Camden Market. This is a bit perverse, as the main reason why so many people use Camden Town Underground Station is to get to Camden Market, so demolishing it so as to make it easier to get to isn't really a well-thought-out plan! To find out more about this and help SAVE CAMDEN MARKET! see www.zyra.org.uk/camthrt.htm , and make sure Camden doesn't go the way of the now extinct Kensington Market www.zyra.org.uk/ken-mkt.htm . Actually I think there are sinister reasons for all this and that evil government forces are trying to destroy alternative culture by various insidious methods, and they are doing this to kill freedom and even the desire for freedom. Of course, being a paranoid schizophrenic myself I would most likely think that anyway, but take a look and see what you think: www.zyra.org.uk/camdsave.htm
And now, considering all that, and the fact that this is yet again a very long Circular Newsletter, time for a BREAK! (Though sadly not a Kit-Kat here, as it most regrettably contains wheat!). Still, it's time to put the kettles on and brew up another jug of tea, even if the container looks less like a cup & saucer and is more reminiscent of those giant jugs you see in an iron foundry for pouring out the molten iron.
Cats! More cat-related links at www.zyra.org.uk/cats.htm , though the dogs get more publicity: The page www.bostanremovals.co.uk/dog-pix.htm (it's a long story) still has Number1 on www.google.com when you type PICTURES OF DOGS. Quite a relief, because there was a worry earlier this week or two when the moving goalposts at search engines in their keywords policies meant that pages such as SKIRTS FOR MEN www.zyra.org.uk/sk4men.htm were banished because of having keywords such as "appearance" and "personal taste" which happened not to be mentioned precisely in the page. So bad was this, that BritArt www.zyra.supanet.com/britart.htm , which had the keyword phrase "emerging artists" was banned because in the actual text it said "emerging and established artists". As you can imagine, I am DISCHUFFED about this, having the mammoth task of over a thousand pages which will need to be tinkered-with in order to avoid banishment for having naff keywords. A lot of work to be done, which would otherwise have gone into creating more webstuff!
Russian submarine for sale. One careful owner. Genuine reason for sale. Similarly, used spacecraft, binoculars, helmets, solidly built technology and all sorts of stuff: www.zyra.org.uk/sovietsk.htm
Now, if I was reading that web address out, it would be www dot zyra dot org dot uk ... and then what? forward-slash? No! Apparently the term "forward slash" is a Microsoftism and should best be avoided. Though not as bad as the sending of Microsoft Word documents (.doc) by e-mail www.zyra.me.uk/dot-doc.htm which is inconvenient as well as annoying, the "forward slash" thing is merely a bit iffy, but has an interesting history to it. See www.zyra.org.uk/fwdslash.htm
Sony teams up with Ericsson: That's at www.zyra.org.uk/sonyeric.htm
On the news you sometimes hear that a spacecraft was put in orbit, which means that it's in space and it somehow stays there. Have you ever wondered WHY it stays up there and doesn't fall? And why to stay up there is has to go round and round? This whole orbiting business is explained at www.zyra.net/orbit.htm in yet another of these Science Made Easy explanations!
Meanwhile, the continuously-changing COFFEE is Tchibo and can be seen at www.zyra.org.uk/tchibo.htm
The RED CROSS. They do a lot of good! There's a link to the British Red Cross at www.zyra.org.uk/redcross.htm - worth a look!
I'm sure I said somewhere I was going to mention the booking of hotels anywhere in the world. That's a useful link, and it's www.zyra.org.uk/lodging.htm , in fact I really should expand it, if it wasn't for having to work on the adjustment of all the keywords. Actually this has also caused confusion because of not knowing which items are actually NEW and which are just adjusted to fit the keywords. Oh well.
More PUNK links at www.zyra.org.uk/punk.htm , and more fashion links at www.zyra.org.uk/fashion.htm , and Uruguayan domains available, oh yes that was something I was going to mention, that the diversity of different domains available has increased. As well as .TK (free domains) (see www.zyra.tk ) there are now a variety of other exotic domains available (at various prices). See www.zyra.org.uk/domain.htm . Incidentally, if you get a domain and you need a webspace, you don't need to put up with silly Yar-Boo-and-Shucks-to-You adverts on it! You can get free webspaces with no adverts on them at www.zyra.org.uk/isp.htm , and there's a similar page www.zyra.org.uk/zsites.htm which has some attractive and intriguing Status Lamps to show some of these webspaces actually active!
SOY SAUCE! The scandal exposed! www.zyra.org.uk/soyfree.htm - I never knew!
I also never knew I'd subscribed to Europa-Find search engine, but that's because I hadn't! If you receive any invoices or bills from Europa Find, write back and tell them the truth. I pointed out that they'd used a harvested address and that if the unsolicited sending of bills continued I'd do what I did for their previous venture which was Europa Club. This I did indeed have a reciprocal link with, but this was agreed in advance. Other people were less fortunate, as can be seen at www.zyra.org.uk/cleuropa.htm
If you run an online business, the news that there's some more affiliate stuff may be of interest. See Ultralinks www.zyra.net/ultralx.htm and ClickBank www.zyra.net/clxbank.htm
See, not everything in the newsletter is for everyone, for example the Transgendered company advertised at www.zyra.tv/tg-net.htm isn't of interest to everyone, but to those it's of interest to, it's most likely VERY interesting!
But putting an end to annoying pop-up advertising and messenger-spam is something which is of interest to just about everyone on the Net. I'm going to be adding some more software links for killing off pop-ups generally, but the category is already in place at www.zyra.org.uk/spopups.htm and there is a good link to MessageBlocker which puts an end to a particular type of problem known as "Messenger Spam". See what you think.
Also, the problem of loads of rubbish arriving by e-mail (spam) can be reduced very considerably by a technique where the e-mail address is cunningly HIDDEN. This can be seen at www.zyra.net/emailhid.htm which tries to explain how to perform the trick.
Also, there's a virus going around which thinks you're going to "Please see Attachment". Surely you'd not be fooled by that?! Even if it claimed to be from support @ microsoft.com ? More anti-virus advice at www.zyra.org.uk/avirus.htm
I always worry that these writings get boring, and I hope I succeed in keeping it all INTERESTING! But not everything is interesting always. You might want to know something or not, but I try to give everyone the choice. But I have heard that a lot of computers which people use to browse the Internet have a restricted browser which is a bit limited. Check yours! If someone said to you "Take a look at www dot ...something" do you have an "address bar" you can put it in? If not, would you like there to be a page on Zyra's site to explain how to resolve that? Also, quite a lot of people are stuck with looking at the page that their Internet host originally bestowed upon them! So, if you're stuck looking at Freeserve, Tiscali, AOL, BT, or any one of a number of places, and you'd like to have the freedom to change it so your browser can start up on what you want, See www.zyra.org.uk/homepage.htm - yes well of course it would be nice if you made it http://www.zyra.org.uk but you don't have to! The choice is up to you! Who'd you like it to be?
Well, that's about it for this Circular, Issue61. I still have not managed to cover everything that's new in this issue, but there's a complete list of everything in date order at www.zyra.org.uk/nindex.htm , or, if you prefer chaos, it's all available randomly at www.zyra.org.uk/rindex.htm !
Apparently, not everyone reads all the stuff in the footnotes of e-mail. Presumably that's because in most e-mail it's just a lot of waffle, so for those of you who are still there, here's a good one: I say I say I say, did you hear the one about the... But seriously folks, Zyra's Circular can be tested to see if it's spam or not by REPLYING to it and seeing if you get an intelligent response or not. Also, if you're sick of receiving these odd newsletters you may put a stop to them by writing to no-more-circulars @ zyra.org.uk and jot me a preferably polite note. There's only about 250 people who receive these Circulars, so it's always sad to see anyone leave. More often, there's a spot of FORWARDING, and some people opt to join the list by writing to circulars-yes-please @ zyra.org.uk or by using the form at www.zyra.org.uk/form.htm where you can also sign up to the circulars of the up-and-coming affiliate business www.xyroth-enterprises.co.uk , newsletter of amateur astronauts Pescu www.pescu.net , and the mad society Voices Forum www.voicesforum.org.uk e-Newsletter, but as I was saying, please DO put the word in and help to promote interestingness in the world! You can even have a printable business card: www.zyra.org.uk/bizca2.htm

It's funny how, even though this is an old message, some of the problems talked about are still the case!
