The company was formed by combining Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Mayer Pictures. If you're wondering what the name of the MGM lion is, it's Leo, although the title sequence role has been played by at least five lions since MGM first started in the days of black & white. Also notice around the emblem, unrolled film and the company motto "Ars Gratia Artis" which means "Art for Art's Sake".
