The New York Times Store
"The
New York Times Store, which offers hundreds of products -- from
books to classic photographs, reprints of vintage news to posters
-- is part of the News Services Division of The New York Times. The Times
strives to offer visitors a secure and safe environment for all
credit card purchases".
"The
Photo Archives, with about 7 million images stored and preserved
over the past century, is one of the largest and most
comprehensive collections of photographs in the world. It had its
beginnings in 1896, when photography made its first appearance in
The Times's Illustrated Sunday Magazine with portraits of Stephen
A. Douglas and John Bell, both candidates for the presidency in
1860. The archives grew day by day with the addition of hundreds
of photos submitted from around the world by staff photographers
and photo agencies. In 1919, the newspaper started its Times Wide
World Photos syndicate, an organization for gathering and
distributing news photos.
The Times sold Wide
World Photos to the Associated Press in 1941, where it still
operates. Today, the Photo Archives grows by hundreds of rolls of
film and many thousands of digital images each week, photographed
by some of the finest journalists in the world. It continues to
serve as an indispensable source of visual history, helping to
make The Times the pre-eminent American newspaper. Several
hundred historic images are now on The New York Times Store, but
it will be adding hundreds of more photographs each year".
This is interesting and intriguing, fascinating and curious, so much so that people have been known to write in and say "Are those photos real?".
